Some plastic containers can go in the microwave, but plenty should not. The safest rule is to look for a microwave safe label.
Can you microwave plastic containers?
TL;DR
Only if labeled microwave safe. Do not microwave random plastic containers.

Takeout containers, butter tubs, and single use plastic containers are often not meant for microwave heat. They can warp or break down.
Even with microwave safe plastic, leave the lid vented so steam can escape. Do not let plastic wrap touch the food unless the packaging says that is okay.
When you are unsure, move the food to glass or ceramic.
Plastic in the microwave is one of those places where the label really matters.
