Dish soap is engineered to cut grease and build thick, long-lasting suds by hand, sometimes producing far more foam per ounce than laundry detergent. A washing machine's agitation multiplies that foam far beyond what the detergent dispenser or rinse cycle can handle, and on high-efficiency machines the excess suds can overflow through the door seal or back up into the drain line within minutes.
For a single grease or oil stain, think salad dressing, motor oil, or fast food grease, rub one or two drops of dish soap directly into the fabric, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then wash normally with regular detergent. The grease-cutting surfactants work well in this small, targeted amount and often outperform detergent alone on fresh oil stains.
Hand washing in a sink is the safer fallback. Use about a quarter-teaspoon of dish soap in a full sink of water, swirl the garment through, and rinse at least twice until no suds remain. Never scale that ratio up to a full machine load, since even a tablespoon in a full-size washer can generate enough foam to reach the door window.
Laundry detergent is formulated with low-foam surfactants specifically so a washing machine's rinse cycle, which uses a set amount of water, can clear it completely. Dish soap has no such limit built in, since it is meant to be rinsed by hand under running water for as long as needed. That difference in design, not the cleaning strength, is the real reason dish soap causes problems in a machine. A high-efficiency washer is especially sensitive to this since it uses less water per cycle than an older top-load model, leaving even less capacity to rinse away excess foam.
Dish soap earns its keep on stubborn grease spots, not as a stand-in detergent. Keep it to a drop or two on fabric and away from the detergent drawer, and you avoid the overflow mess entirely.
Expect excessive suds that can leak from the door seal or back up through the drain. Run one or more extra rinse cycles until the foam clears, and mop up any overflow right away.
One or two drops rubbed directly into the stained fabric is enough. Anything more starts to risk residue that's hard to rinse out even by hand.
It's less about damage to the fabric and more about residue, since dish soap isn't formulated to rinse cleanly from fibers, so clothes can end up stiff or slightly greasy-feeling if too much is used.
A very small amount, well diluted in a full sink and rinsed thoroughly, is generally fine for sturdy fabrics, but it's not gentle enough for silk or wool the way a dedicated delicate-wash soap is.
