What actually matters after a phone gets wet is what you do in the first few minutes: stopping power flow and stopping moisture from spreading, not what container you leave it in overnight.
Why Rice Doesn't Work
Rice grains are too large and too slow at absorbing moisture to meaningfully dry the inside of a sealed device. Comparisons with silica gel packets consistently show rice pulls out less water in the same time frame, and rice dust can also work into the charging port or speaker grille.
What to Do in the First Five Minutes
- Power the phone off immediately, don't turn it on to check if it works
- Remove the case, SIM tray, and any plugged-in accessories
- Gently pat the outside dry with a soft cloth
- Do not plug it into a charger or press buttons repeatedly
Better Drying Methods
Stand the phone upright, port facing down, in a dry, room-temperature spot with good airflow, near a fan works well. Silica gel packets in a sealed container absorb moisture faster and more completely than rice. Give it a minimum of 24-48 hours before charging.
What Not to Do
Skip the hair dryer, oven, microwave, or direct sunlight, heat can push moisture deeper into the device or damage internal components. Avoid shaking the phone hard, which can spread water to parts that were still dry.
When to See a Professional
If the phone was fully submerged for more than a few seconds, went into salt water, or shows a triggered liquid-damage indicator near the SIM tray, a repair shop can open it up and dry it thoroughly before corrosion sets in.
